Apart from what is discussed in this blog, there are many other issues surrounding media and society. As a last post I would like to presents five of these issues and I really recommend you to visit them to understand what issues exist with media and society.
1) LGBTQI+ and their representation in media ( by Ana Maria Cantor Daza)
The representation of LGBTQ+ within media has been lacking and when available has been subjected to some unsavoury stereotypes. Although the basis of media such as movies and tv shows is primarily to entertain viewers, there is a form of responsibility to present the world as it is, not simply a section that is deemed palatable.
This blog does a fantastic overview of the issues that exist relating the representation of LGBTQ+ in the media and I highly recommend everyone to read it.
2) Gender stereotypes in children related media (by Maria Evghenia Gaina)
Media designated for children is not immune to gender stereotypes present within all other areas of media. With children spending a significant portion of their day consuming this type of media, what effects might that have on their perception of "correct" behaviour and how does it effect them and there development long term.
Have you ever thought about the way Disney (or other child channels) presents their characters and how it impact the young viewers? Read about this and many more issues in this blog.
3) Backstage pass - Social media vs. reality (by Jacqueline Kalineca)
Content creators and celebrities alike post their life on social media for users to consume. Is it their real life? No, it isn't, and people are becoming aware of it. However not many know the exact ways that content is made to create this perfect life and the impact it has on the people who consume it. Although many are aware that the portrayed life is unattainable, people still blame themselves for not living the perfect standard presented on social media. Jacqueline's blog goes into a number of issues within this matter.
4) FOMO - Our strongest enemy (by Evgeniia Solomkina)
Going from the discrepancies of reality and content presented on social media, a related topic, fear of missing out (FOMO). Comparing oneself to others, always seeing what they have and you don't. Although it existed for a long time, the introduction of technology has maintained and even increased the severity of this issue.
The effects of FOMO can range from negative self talk to depression, and while it is usually regarded as a strictly negative issue, there is some it could serve as a motivational factor for people to strive to better their life.
Whatever your opinion of FOMO is, this blog is bound to include a post that will present an interesting topic for your reading.
5) Impact of TikTok on society ( by Liliya Sabitova)
As an avid user but also one that is eager to criticise the app I feel that the two stances rarely go hand in hand. However, the perspective Liliya brings in this blog makes for an interesting read. Acknowledging the potential positive outcomes of the app while providing valid evaluation and discussion is refreshing compared to a one sided defence or heavy critique.
